CALVO IS A POSSIBLE TARGET

Feyenoord has confirmed a report in the Argentinean daily ‘Ole’ that 21-year-old Boca Juniors defender José Maria Calvo is a possible target, while at the same time refuting rumours that a deal has already been done. Club manager Jan D. Swart clarified that Calvo is ‘just one of the candidates who could follow up Emerton, but the interest in Brett has been very quiet these past few months.’

‘As long as the earlier interest in Brett Emerton does not harden, it is not to be expected that Feyenoord will spend money on a replacement. What’s more, Calvo is not the only candidate. Rob Baan’s wishlist is very long. There’s more than one right-sided defender in it. But it is true that he knows of Calvo. He has seen him in action on more than one occasion – as he has seen the others.’ The two million dollar transfer fee for Calvo bandied about in the international press has been called ‘a shot across the bows’ by Feyenoord. ‘When buying or selling I’ve never read a fee that was even anywhere near the true figure. Not this time either,’ explained Swart. José Maria Calvo was a member of the Argentine squad that took part in the 2001 world youth championships in Buenos Aires.
