ONO BACK FOR TRAINING ON TIME

The black cloud of elimination from the World Cup after Japan’s single goal defeat to a strong Turkish side does have a sliver lining for Feyenoord. It means that Shinji Ono will be able to join the rest of the squad in Austria for the club’s preseason training camp. The midfielder has been given three week’s holiday by coach Van Marwijk, as has Poland’s Tomasz Rzasa. Ono is expected to arrive back in Rotterdam Friday 12 July.

The Feyenoorders depart two days later for Austria, where the squad is set to take part in an international tournament in Tyrol 17 and 18 July alongside German teams HSV Hamburg and Kaiserslautern and Turkish outfit Fenerbahçe. Two players will miss the trip: the youngsters Robin van Persie (back) and Ebi Smolarek (knee). Feyenoord return to the Netherlands on Sunday 21 July. The UEFA Cup winners play a further two warmup games a week later, against Spijkenisse and centenary celebrating Excelsior.
