FOUR-STARS FOR YOUTH TRAINING EFFORTS

Feyenoord’s youth training project has been awarded four-star certification for 2002-2004. The Rotterdam club was joined by five other Dutch clubs, namely PSV, Fortuna Sittard, FC Twente, FC Utrecht and Vitesse Arnhem. Martin van der Kooij, the manager in charge of youth training at Feyenoord’s youth academy Varkenoord, was officially presented with the certificate by ex-Dutch national coach Rinus Michels.

The youth training certification system is a quality assurance classification on a par with the ISO system. The quality of youth training, the responsibility of Feyenoord Technical Director Rob Baan, is determined on the basis of 151 criteria, catalogued and measured objectively. These criteria are tightly linked to four areas of expertise. A club’s ‘vision’ accounts for 30% of the final score, whereas ‘scouting’ and ‘training’ each make up 25% and ‘support’ the final 20%. Three stars were awarded to AZ Alkmaar, FC Groningen, Heerenveen and Helmond Sport. Cambuur Leeuwaarden, Eindhoven, Go Ahead Eagles, Sparta and VVV were awarded two stars. Certification is on a voluntary basis.
