EBI’S WORLD CUP DREAMS IN TATTERS

News that he will have to have surgery on his right knee at the earliest opportunity has shattered any hopes Ebi Smolarek may have had of hooking up with the Polish national team for this year’s World Cup. After damaging his cruciate ligaments in the away game at Sparta 23 March, the Feyenoord man looked to be well on the way to a full recovery ahead of the summer’s big event, but suffered a relapse Friday.

According to Feyenoord manager Jan D. Swart, Ebi himself has been philosophical about the latest developments. The youngster was recently warned he may face disciplinary action after his random drugs test urine sample was found to contain a high concentration of cannabinol, and he had hoped to gain some solace with an adventure in the Far East, 'But he’d really already put that out of his mind. Even if his recovery had gone normally he would not have been fit in time,’ admitted Swart.
