SILVER LINING FOR ONO AND FEYENOORD

Losing three points and Pierre van Hooijdonk for the rest of the Eredivisie campaign was bad enough, but Thursday’s 1-0 defeat in Doetinchem initially looked to have cost Feyenoord the services of Shinji Ono for a protracted period also. The Japanese turned his ankle and clearly had an uncomfortable ten minutes before being substituted. Afterwards though, every seemed to be okay, with Ono even claiming, ‘I expect to be available Sunday.’

‘Shinji twisted his ankle,’ explained doctor Robbart van Linschoten, who examined the Japanese international in the Feyenoord dressing room. ‘At the moment everything points to a light sprain, so it’s better than anticipated. That would mean that Shinji is available for Sunday. But I’m not committing myself. We’ll have to wait to see if there’s any swelling around the ankle tomorrow morning. We’ll know more then.’
