TROUSSIER RESTS ONO

Shinji Ono will play no part in Japan’s friendly doubleheader in the Far East against Slovakia and Honduras next week. National coach Philippe Troussier (photo) feels it’s time for the midfielder to put club before country. ‘The club is in a crucial phase of the championship,’ said Troussier, who also confirmed that he’ll not announce his final World Cup squad until 17 May, because ‘17 is my lucky number.’

It’s not the first time the Frenchman in the service of the Japanese has shown how much he understands the claims of club football over international soccer.
