NO REPRIEVE FOR BRETT

UEFA has dismissed a request submitted by Feyenoord to nullify the yellow card shown to Brett Emerton in the semifinal of the UEFA Cup last week, despite what seems to be clear television evidence of the Australian’s innocence. The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body claimed Wednesday that it is not authorised to change referee Lopez Nieto’s decision. That means Emerton will miss the final on 8 May. Feyenoord is considering whether it wishes to appeal the decision.

In what some may find a curious explanation, the UEFA’s Control & Disciplinary Body stated that it was unable to correct Nieto’s unfortunate decision. Only in clear cases of mistaken identity may the referee’s judgement be overturned, it added. Nieto showed yellow to Emerton for timewasting at a corner kick, although TV pictures unambiguously show that the Feyenoord man was simply following up the instructions of the assistant referee, who insisted that the ball was not in the quarter circle.
