Tomasson is unavailable in attack due to a ban, but the real teaser for Van Marwijk is in defence where De Haan and Loovens are still out with groin strains. It is too early to say whether the game has come too soon for Civard Sprockel. The young defender did train with the squad Friday but: “he did have a bit of trouble,” Van Marwijk explained. “It’ll depend on how he reacts Saturday. If it goes well than Sprockel will be an option in the centre. Christian Gyan had a satisfactory game against Groningen though and to my mind he’s a very good defender. So he is the first option. But Vitesse have Bob Peeters. He is very good with his head and in that case Gyan could have problems with his height. I’ll have to think about it.” In truth Peeters is unlikely to start due to injury so it would appear that Gyan will get the nod.
As for Jon Dahl Tomasson’s replacement, the big money seems to be on Shinji Ono. Bonaventure Kalou is also available on the left again, so Johan Elmander may start on the bench.
Feyenoord haven’t collected all three points in Arnhem since 1994/1995, when Ronald Koeman opened the scoring in a 2-0 win. With the championship hotting up it would be a blow if the league leaders were unable to take home the spoils this time around.
