Edwin Zoetebier’s third clean sheet in as many games was the launch pad Feyenoord needed to go on to collect all the points at a packed Oosterpark in sunday’s Eredivisie clash against Groningen. The game was not a classic, but Feyenoord won’t mind about that. In the end it was Jon Dahl Tomasson’s fifth strike in as many games that secured the win.

Bert van Marwijk was forced to bring in Chris Gyan for Glenn Loovens, but otherwise started with the same players who began against Fortuna midweek, with Ebi Smolarek on the left and Shinji Ono on the right. And Ono it was who created Feyenoord’s first chance after ten minutes. The Japanese international’s cross beat everyone but Tomasson at the far post, but the Dane was unable to find the goal. Within minutes Ono was again at the bottom of things, but Bosvelt was unable to cash in. The home side were next to threaten, on the half hour, when Krstev thundered in a header from a corner only to see Zoots pull off a tremendous reflex save to keep Feyenoord on level terms. Zoetebier’s efforts were doubly rewarded just before the break when Feyenoord unexpectedly took the lead. A high cross didn’t look promising initially, but Jon Dahl Tomasson brought the ball under control before sending the ball into the top corner with his left foot, despite the close attentions of defender Floren. In the second forty-five Feyenoord seemed happy to close things down at the back and cruise to the three points. Groningen showed why they are so low down the table as they failed to put any sustained pressure on the visitor’s defence. And yet as the game reached its climax the home side did get some steam up and might have snatched a point. Robben went close and then Van Gessel threatened to break down the red and white resistance, yet it was a Hans Visser free kick from inside the D that almost snatch two points from Feyenoord’s haul. The ball rebounded off the lower side of the bar however, and referee Van Dijk blew fulltime seconds later.
