KALOU: I’D RATHER HAVE STAYED HERE

While his team-mates were preparing for the match with Fortuna Sittard, Bonaventure Kalou was undergoing a fitness test under the watchful eye of Toine van de Goolberg yesterday (Wednesday). The Ivorian appeared fit and eager upon his return from a personally disappointing African Cup of Nations. “I’m happy to be back and I’ll be fighting for a first team place. Oh and yes, I didn’t go missing!”

Kalou didn’t have the best of tournaments. The striker played very little and he told the Feyenoord website that he doesn’t want to play for his country under the present circumstances. “I went with the idea of creating something fantastic for my country. I wanted to show something to the Ivory Coast fans. But given the circumstances around the national team that was not possible. Something really has to change with Ivory Coast, otherwise I’ll be forced to draw my conclusions.”
