After Sunday’s whirlwind start it was always going to be difficult for the home side to please the crowd and the visitors did a good job of closing things down in the first half. Tomasson and Van Hooijdonk were almost invisible as the Feyenoord midfield found things tough in the centre of the park. Tomasson did have the first chance of the game after fifteen minutes as he attempted to lob keeper Hesp, who found himself too far from his line, but the Fortuna goalie got back well to fingertip the ball over his bar.
Otherwise Feyenoord were finding things hard. Loovens was lacking any real confidence at the back and that seemed to be affecting the home side’s build up play. It was perhaps not so strange that the youngster was replaced at the beginning of the second half. It was Elmander who came on, while Van Wonderen reverted to centre half.
The change brought Feyenoord to life and the home side stepped up the pressure. First Smolarek tried from distance only to see his shot stopped by Hesp. Then Van Hooijdonk threw in a free kick to no avail. The goal finally came from a corner. Elmander played the ball into the box, where Bosvelt headed into the danger zone right to Tomasson’s feet. The Dane gratefully slotted the ball home to the relief of the fans.
Tomasson might have doubled Feyenoord’s lead within a few minutes but he was just stretching too much to control the ball in the box and in the end the home side had to do with a 1-0 win that takes them to the top of the table.
