It was a sour opening period for Roda keeper Kalac, whose first touch in open play came after his side had already conceded two goals. The first after ninety seconds came when Bosvelt played a wonderful reverse pass to open up the visitor’s defence and Emerton nipped in to slot home as Kalac was still making up his mind whether to come or not.
A minute or two later it was Emerton again who found himself in space in the box only to be pushed off the ball by Vandenbroek. Van Hooijdonk gratefully fired home the resulting penalty to give Feyenoord an unexpected two-goal cushion so early in the game.
Feyenoord proceeded to take the foot off the pedal and it gave Roda a chance to play themselves back into the game. They almost pegged a goal back when Soetaers saw his shot saved by Zoetebier. A few minutes later Nygaard looked to have netted but again ‘Zoots’ got down well to deny him and send the home side in at the break with a two goal lead.
With Smolarek on for Elmander, Feyenoord were more dangerous in the second half, but it was Emerton again who broke open the Roda defence for the third, latching on to a loose ball in the penalty area, before sidestepping three defenders and striking home.
As the home side pressed, Paauwe rammed the ball against the bar with a free-kick, but Feyenoord were not to be denied. Ono found Smolarek, who headed goalwards, and although Kalac parried, Van Hooijdonk followed up to net the fourth. Striking partner Tommasson grabbed the fifth before being substituted, and getting a standing ovation in the process. His replacement Robin van Persie must have been very happy to get his chance.
