Feyenoord were dumped out of the Amstel Cup by PSV Wednesday night in Eindhoven, after penalty kicks were needed to separate the sides. Despite taking an early lead through Tomasson, the visitors were unable to kill off the game and conceded an equaliser in the second half when Kezman pounced. In the end it went to penalties and Brett Emerton drew the short straw. But anyone can miss a penalty, and Emerton will bounce back.

Feyenoord started with Glenn Loovens in the centre of defence, alongside Patrick Paauwe, and the Rotterdam youngster must have felt a little more relaxed after five minutes when his team took the lead. Van Hooijdonk headed on a Zoetebier clearance into the stride of Jon Dahl Tomasson, who saw PSV keeper Loderwijks off his line and lobbed the ball into the empty net. Feyenoord were looking steady at the back. Tomasz Rzasa had his hands full with Rommedahl, but Loovens was playing it by the book and can justifiably look back on an impressive full debut against one of the country’s top strikers, Vennegoor of Hesselink. There were few genuine opportunities in the first half, although the game was a good spectacle and both sets of supporters made themselves heard. Feyenoord came closest when Paauwe rifled in a free kick from far outside the box, only to see his effort foiled by a post. Still the visitors would have been pleased to go in one up at the break. The game started to go away from Feyenoord as the hour mark approached. PSV coach Gerets brought on Kezman for Bruggink and the Serb repaid him with a goal within a minute. Van Bommel and Rommedahl combined well and the ball was worked through to Kezman, who made no mistake from close in to level. The goal spurred the home side on and PSV soon gained the upper hand. But chances were few and far between from either side. With the teams evens-stevens after ninety minutes they were given another thirty to sort things out on their own, but to no avail. Van Marwijk put on Korneev as the Russian roulette of penalties loomed. The series started well, before Dos Santos ballooned Feyenoord’s second over. Then Zoetebier saved PSV’s fifth from Bouma to level again. As the tension grew Emerton was foiled by Lodewijks and Rommedahl put the tie to bed and PSV into the semis.
