AFRICAN CUP: IVORIANS HOMEWARD BOUND

In the end the African Cup of Nations was a short stop rather than a long haul for Bonaventure Kalou. The Feyenoord striker played, but Ivory Coast lost the decider against DR of Congo 3-1, sending the Congolese through to the quarterfinals and the Elephants home. In the other group game titleholder Cameron beat Togo 3-0 to book its place in the quarters. Kalou is expected back in Rotterdam very soon.

After two games on the bench Kalou finally got his chance in the win-or-die match, preferred ahead of Bakayoko. Kalou had a good game and was close on a couple of occasions, but ultimately the Democratic Republic was too strong. Goals by Yvos ('27), Nonda ('66) and Komoto (penalty, '80) secured the win, before Kandia scored a consolation in the last minute for Ivory Coast.
