The home side started brightest in front of a passionate crowd with Booth and De Gier proving a real handful for the Feyenoord back four of Van Wonderen, Paauwe, Rzasa and Gyan. De Gier had the first chance, heading wide after good work by ex-Feyenoord trainee Cairo. Ten minutes later Jeroen Heubach’s speculative free kick thundered against the post.
With Feyenoord on the back foot, Twente smelled blood and it wasn’t long before they took the lead. Kees van Wonderen was caught in possession on the edge of his own box and when the ball fell to Booth the Scot made no mistake from close in.
Twente might have doubled their lead before the break, but as it was Feyenoord went in at halftime only one goal down.
The match turned dramatically in Feyenoord’s favour around the hour mark however. Smolarek found Van Hooijdonk on the edge of the penalty area and the big man placed his shot deftly beyond keeper Boschker for the equaliser. Then Jon Dahl Tomasson chased down a deep Ono pass. He beat Boschker to the ball but was forced wide and his shot looked to have missed the target until a nervous Patrick Pothuizen misjudged the clearance and the ball ended up in the empty net to hand Van Marwijk’s men the lead.
But just when they looked to be on the ropes, Twente showed they had the metal to get back into it. Feyenoord had ridden their luck and looked to have survived a late onslaught by the home side. Then things got ugly. With a minute on the clock Pothuizen rubbed out his earlier blunder to fire Twente level from a distance. And the unthinkable happened in the 94th minute when De Gier found the ball at his feet only a few yards out, and made no mistake to floor Feyenoord well and truly and snatch all three points for his side.
