AUSTRALIA FAIL IN WORLD CUP BID

Australia’s dream of playing in another World Cup finals will have to wait another five years after they were beaten 3-0 by Uruguay in Montevideo this morning Australian time. Big game experience proved the difference with Uruguay proving too good on the day for Australia, to advance 3-1 on goal difference. It was Brett Emerton that had the first chance of the game in just the 2nd minute but he sliced his shot well wide.

Uruguay led 1-0 at the break and scored twice in the last 20 minutes to seal victory that sent Uruguay to their first finals since 1990. Pablo Morales scored twice for Uruguay but it was their two big guns – Alvaro Recoba and Dario Silva - that did the damage. Recoba aid on the two goals for substitute Morales and Silva scored a superb goal in the first half to set Uruguay on their way. Australia dominated the second half and were unlucky not to get a goal with Uruguay goalkeeper Carini making some good saves, while Mark Viduka missed a chance in the six yard box that would have brought the scores level. As expected Uruguay came out to attack and Silva and Reguiero caused loads of problems for the Socceroos defence with their speed.
