VAN MARWIJK FORCED TO SHUFFLE HIS PACK

Not for the first time this season, Bert van Marwijk will be forced to improvise when he names his side to take on SC Freiburg in Thursday’s UEFA cup meeting. For one reason or another Feyenoord are without nine first-teamers. ‘There’s not really much more to improvise,’ the trainer explained at a press conference Thursday. ‘I have so few players left, the team basically picks itself. But it doesn’t make it any easier to secure a good result.’

The personnel crisis that dogged Feyenoord the second half of last season has returned with a vengeance. The Rotterdammers’ treatment room is full. Jean-Paul van Gastel, Kees van Wonderen, Pieter Collen, Patrick Paauwe, Ulrich van Gobbel, Tininho and Ramon van Haaren all miss out Thursday. Pierre van Hooijdonk serves out the last game of a three-match ban after seeing red in the Champions’ League against Sparta Prague. Brett Emerton is currently on the other side of the world, preparing for Australia’s playoff second leg against Uruguay. POSSIBLE LINEUP: Feyenoord: Zoetebier; Gyan, De Haan, Sprockel, Rzasa; Kalou, Bosvelt, De Visser, Ono; Tomasson, Elmander. SC Freiburg: Golz; Diarra, Kondé (Zeyer), Müller, Zkitishvili ; Kobiashvili, Tanko, But, Willi; Iashvili, Sellimi
