Anass Achahbar will remain at Feyenoord for another four years. The club and the 21-year-old have reached agreement on an extension to the striker’s contract, which will now run until mid 2017. Achahbar’s current deal was set to expire at the end of the season.
Achahbar only ever wanted to remain at De Kuip. ‘That’s why I am delighted that the club and I have reached agreement,’ said the Dutch-born striker. ‘What was the decisive factor for me? My love for the club. I’ve played here since I was a young boy and it’s still a great honour for me to play for Feyenoord. Plus I see lots of opportunities for me to develop further here and I would like to continue improving as I have done recently.’
Technical director Martin van Geel feels that Feyenoord can look forward to some great times with the talented youth international. ‘Anass is a player with a lot of special qualities, and he has used them to prove he can be very valuable to Feyenoord,’ said Van Geel.‘He is technically very skilful, with a nose for goal and an excellent shot, as we saw in the home game against PSV, for instance, while he can play in all positions up front. Also, as a product of the youth academy, he has a big appetite to make a success of himself here. That’s why we are very happy that Anass will remain under contract at Feyenoord in the coming years.’
Achahbar also expressed his delight that his sporting future has been clarified with the new contract extension. ‘It means I can focus completely on football and of course securing European football with Feyenoord. We have to play as a team on Sunday against PEC Zwolle to hold on to third place. Everything else is secondary. Obviously I hope I can be of value myself, but the most important thing is that we get three points.’
Achahbar made his Feyenoord first-team debut back in August 2011, when Ronald Koeman blooded him in the home game against sc Heerenveen. He was part of the A squad in the subsequent season, and was loaned out to Arminia Bielefeld last campaign. The left-footed attacker grabbed his chance under Fred Rutten, scoring key goals after the winter break in games against FC Dordrecht and PSV. Achahbar has racked up 11 appearances this season, netting four times.
