Sven van Beek and Feyenoord have agreed a new and improved contract that will keep the 20-year-old at the club until mid 2018. The defender’s current deal was set to expire on 1 July 2016, with an option on a one-year extension. Van Beek, who has expressed a wish to remain at Feyenoord on a number of occasions recently, will sign his new contract shortly.
Martin van Geel expressed his delight at agreeing the deal with Van Beek, who has become a regular in the Feyenoord defence since August. ‘Sven has come on leaps and bounds this season and has shown on a weekly basis why he is worth a place in the starting line-up from the first game of the season.’
‘It’s fantastic to see a boy from the club’s own youth academy mature like this,’ the technical director continued. ‘This new contract is a well-deserved reward for the progress he’s making and we are delighted to be able to extend his stay at the club. We feel Sven has a lot of potential for further growth at Feyenoord in the years to come.’
Van Beek himself had no trouble deciding whether he would extend his contract at Feyenoord. ‘Because I feel great here,’ said the defender. ‘Plus this is my first full season as a first-team regular and I feel I can get much better at Feyenoord. Certainly under this coach, who is helping me a lot with my development. He works with me a lot and he notices the little details, which only helps me improve. I don’t feel the need to leave for a long time.’
Van Beek is a player of vast potential who has been at Feyenoord since joining the D youths. His progress through the youth academy was rewarded in January 2014 with his first professional contract at De Kuip. He went on to make his first-team debut in the same month (an away game at PSV in the KNVB cup). This season Van Beek has cemented his place in the centre of defence, enjoying the confidence of coach Fred Rutten. The defender also scored his first Eredivisie and Europa League goals this season.
