Feyenoord will meet Fenerbahçe in a friendly in the runup to the new season. The match against the Turkish A-listers, who were Robin van Persie’s employers before his move to Feyenoord at the start of this year, will be played at the Şükrü Saracoğlustadion stadium in Istanbul on Saturday 21 July, kick-off 20:00 Rotterdam time (21:00 local time).
European encounters
Feyenoord and Fenerbahçe are no familiar foes. The two teams were drawn against each other in the third qualifying round of the 2002-2003 Champions League. A Shinji Ono goal won the first leg for Feyenoord at De Kuip, with the Japanese midfielder getting another in the second leg. Thomas Buffel scored late on in Istanbul to send Feyenoord through 3-0 on aggregate. Two years ago, the sides met again in the group stage of the Europa League. The Turkish outfit won both encounters 1-0.
Runners up
Fenerbahçe finished three points behind champions Galatasaray in last season’s Turkish Super Lig. That means that Fener will have to come through the third qualifying round to earn a place in the Champions League group stage.
