Feyenoord ended the first half of the season on Sunday afternoon with a 5-1 win against Roda JC Kerkrade. Giovanni van Bronckhorst was satisfied with the score, but also with much of his side’s performance.
Feyenoord’s head coach especially enjoyed the first part of the match, which saw his side race into a 2-0 lead in the first four minutes. ‘The standard in the early stages was very high,’ said Van Bronckhorst. ‘We were very good; that is the Feyenoord I like to see. Although we should have scored more. We could have be 3-0 or 4-0 ahead in the first half.’
Foot off pedal
Instead of adding to the lead, Feyenoord allowed Roda JC to get back into the game with a goal of their own early in the second half. ‘It’s not the first time that’s happened to us this season,’ said Van Bronckhorst, referring to last Thursday’s cup tie against Heracles Almelo, among other matches. ‘That we take our foot off the pedal in matches after a strong phase is something we’re working on. But the confidence is gradually returning to the team, not least due to the run we’ve been on in recent weeks.’
We are going into Christmas with a good feeling,’ said Van Bronckhorst, who will be back on the training pitch with his squad on Monday 8 January. ‘We will now have a rest, enjoy the holidays and recharge our batteries for the second half of the season. We still have so much to play for.’
