The UEFA Youth League last sixteen tie between Feyenoord Under 19s and Chelsea Under 19s will be played on Wednesday 21 Feb...
Giovanni van Bronckhorst had mixed feelings on Wednesday evening after the 3-1 defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk. This is what the Feyenoord head coach had to say in the post-match press conference.
‘We played at a good standard, made things difficult for Shakhtar and made a game of it. That’s good against a team with so much quality, but at the end of the day we were not good enough to get anything here,’ Van Bronckhorst began.
‘We did well to get the lead, but we lost it far too quickly. For the first goal a midfielder who went deep suddenly found space in front of Brad. We gave the second goal away for too easily. If you make a mistake at Champions League level, it will be punished,’ was the head coach’s hard conclusion.
Van Bronckhorst was also happy that Feyenoord did not give up after going behind. ‘The lads kept the faith that there was more to get. We had good chances to get back into the game in both the first and second half. The only thing I can criticise my team for is that we didn’t take those chances.’
After four matches Feyenoord are still looking for their first point, but Van Bronckhorst feels playing at this level is a valuable experience for his players. ‘There’s a big difference between match one and now. We are progressing well. We are increasingly learning what we have to do to be able to win matches, but we haven’t managed it yet. That’s because the opponents are of a very high standard.’
Despite four defeats, Feyenoord remain in contention for a third place finish, as Napoli only have three points themselves. ‘We certainly have a chance. If the results of both matches in the next round go right we might still have a chance in the final match against Napoli. As long as that possibility exists, we have to go for it.’
