‘The confidence is back,’ said a satisfied Feyenoord head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst on Friday afternoon, two days before the TOTO KNVB cup final. Van Bronckhorst faced the press alongside captain Karim El Ahmadi in Zeist to look ahead to the showdown against AZ. They spoke about recent results, Sunday’s opponents and the expectations.
‘We can win the second of three Dutch trophies on Sunday,’ said Van Bronckhorst. ‘This season began with victory in the Johan Cruijff Shield and then got tough. But the confidence is now back. We have now won six league matches in succession.’
‘Great will to win,’ says El Ahmadi
Feyenoord are also looking to win their sixth TOTO KNVB Cup tie of the season on Sunday, after victories over ADO Den Haag, A.V.V. Swift, Heracles Almelo, PSV and Willem II. ‘There is a great will to win,’ said El Ahmadi. ‘The season has not gone as we wanted but winning the cup would put something right.’
Feyenoord are formally the away team at their own stadium on Sunday. ‘Playing at De Kuip does add something,’ explained El Ahmadi. ‘All the trophies we have won in recent years we have won at De Kuip. So playing there feels good.’
Form and fate
Feyenoord are certainly not nailed on to win the cup on Sunday, says Van Bronckhorst. ‘In a final anything can happen. On Sunday they’ll be two teams that can win. AZ demonstrated that in the league. They are in form and the same goes for us. The team that shows their form and has some luck on Sunday will win.’
