Giovanni van Bronckhorst piloted his team to the semi-final of the TOTO KNVB Cup with a 2-0 win against PSV on Wednesday evening. This is what the head coach had to say.
‘We started the match well and brightly and took control,’ said Van Bronckhorst after the final whistle. ‘We wanted to push PSV backwards with lots of passion, fight and pressure. We managed that and it soon resulted in the 1-0; a fantastic goal. After that the sides were evenly matched and we were a bit sloppy with the ball. Still we got to 2-0, a fabulous goal from Tonny. That lead was deserved based on the first half.’
Van Bronckhorst saw his side have more problems after the break. ‘We were forced back, but we gave little away, especially in the final stages. We were solid defensively and able to defend all the PSV crosses well. I’m proud of the team’s character and attitude. We wanted to get through at any price.’
After the match Van Bronckhorst also addressed the situation with Nicolai Jørgensen, who missed out on a foreign transfer in the final days of the transfer window. ‘I spoke with him before and know that he would be ready for it. There is now clarity for him; he will see out the season at Feyenoord. That is a weight off his shoulders.’
