Orkun Kökcü will soon be signing a new deal with Feyenoord. The club has reached an agreement in principle with the 18-year-old that will tie down the attacking midfielder until 2023. Kökcü’s current contract is set to expire in the summer of 2020.
Kökcü trained with the first team a couple of times before joining the elite squad permanently this summer. He made his debut in impressive fashion at FC Emmen on Sunday 9 December. Kökcü, who describes himself as ‘a creative midfielder who serves the strikers and occasionally snatches a goal,’ immediately showed what he could do.
He was involved in two goals that afternoon and scored the third himself in a 4-1 win. He netted again against Vitesse on Sunday, bringing his strike rate to two in three appearances, with one assist.
‘I an incredibly proud to be able to put my signature to a new contract less than two years after signing my first professional contract here,’ said a radiant Kökcü shortly after the news was announced.
‘I have been able to earn this with the progress I have made this year. It only motivates me even more to take the next steps. I have spoken to the club in detail about the plans with me and feel the confidence that I can develop into a regular at Feyenoord in the coming years.’
After Feyenoord tied another talented academy product to the club for a longer period, technical director Martin van Geel stressed the versatility and mentality of the young midfielder. ‘Orkun has everything a modern creative midfielder needs and so the potential to be very important here over the coming years. Plus, he is two-footed, which makes him even more complete. As well as all his footballing qualities he also has the right mentality to realise that potential. We are going to get a lot of pleasure from him.’
