Feyenoord eliminated FC Utrecht on Thursday night to reach the quarterfinals of the KNVB Cup. The only goal of the game came from the head of Tonny Vilhena. Despite the tight score line, Giovanni van Bronckhorst;’s side dominated throughout, creating but failing to convert a raft of chances.
Feyenoord in the driving seat
The last-sixteen TOTO KNVB Cup tie was an important one for holders Feyenoord. And in front of a good crowd at De Kuip, warmed up by the Hermes House Band and a fun TIFO action before kick-off, Feyenoord dominated from the first whistle.
The hosts were fairly profligate, however, if somewhat unlucky. Back in the starting line-up, Robin van Persie hit the bar with a free kick, while FC Utrecht keeper David Jensen denied Sam Larsson not once, but twice. First he swiped the ball away from under the bar from a free kick. Not long after he held on to the Swede’s header on the goal line.
Vilhena with the breakthrough
Tonny Vilhena edged Feyenoord ahead just before the half-hour struck. He actually headed over the line twice to be sure. The cross came from Larsson, the finish close in left Jensen with no chance. Feyenoord seemed to be constantly attacking in the first half and it looked likely that the lead would be increased as the game wore on.
The chances came thick and fast after the break, including one for Luis Sinisterra. On for Steven Berghuis, the Colombian headed against the post. Van Persie blasted the rebound high over the bar. As the barrage continued, Jens Toornstra saw Jensen claw his effort away as it headed for the corner. Renato Tapia and Nicolai Jørgensen came on for Jordy Clasie and Robin van Persie respectively as Feyenoord looked to create some breathing space.
FC Utrecht hit back
The game was into its final minutes before FC Utrecht started posing a threat. A Timo Letschert header was cleared off the line by Jens Toornstra and Nick Venema headed across the face of the goal. An equaliser would have been much more than coach Dick Advocaat’s side deserved.
Draw on Saturday
The win earned Feyenoord a place in the last eight of the TOTO KNVB Cup. The draw will be held on Saturday. The other clubs in the draw are Vitesse, Ajax, Fortuna Sittard, sc Heerenveen, AZ, FC Twente and Willem II.
