Feyenoord earned a sixth successive home win against FC Groningen on Sunday. The northern visitors were beaten 1-0 with Jens Toornstra scoring a beauty early on. The victory gives Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side confidence going into next Sunday’s encounter with table-toppers PSV.
Feyenoord began full of fire against FC Groningen. Within seconds of the kick-off striker Nicolai Jørgensen found himself face to face with visiting keeper Sergio Padt after the hosts passed it through the middle. The Dane was unable to get the ball under control and get off a shot, but the tone had been set.
The wait for the goal was not a long one, though. Jordy Clasie found Jens Toornstra, who started in place of the injured Robin van Persie, with a ball over the top and the midfielder controlled it with his chest. He didn’t allow the ball to hit the deck, steering it into the bottom left-hand corner with a sweetly struck volley.
After the breakthrough, Feyenoord were unable to get into their rhythm going forward. The only chance the hosts created was a Tonny Vilhena shot. That allowed FC Groningen to get a foothold in the game, with the visitors creating openings through Samir Memisevic and especially Ritsu Doan. It took Jordy Clasie, the post and Justin Bijlow to thwart Doan.
Frame takes a battering
The hosts had to work hard to pierce the Groningen defence after the break too. But whenever they did, Padt was able to save or clear. Tonny Vilhena and Steven Berghuis did outwit the Groningen keeper in the final stages, but the former rattled the bar, while the latter hit the post.
FC Groningen went close through Mimoun Mahi, who shot across goal, but in the end Toornstra’s early strike was enough to secure the three points. It was the sixth home win on the trot for Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who had brought on Dylan Vente and Yassin Ayoub for Nicolai Jørgensen and Sam Larsson in the second half.
