The Feyenoord players have taken their first steps in the build-up to the new season. Around ten thousand supporters made the trip to De Kuip on Sunday to watch coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst take the first session of preseason. It was the perfect opportunity for fans to welcome several new faces.
One of those fresh arrivals in the brand-new Feyenoord home shirt was Marko Vejinovic, who hooked up with his new squad-mates just two days after signing a four-year deal with the club.
Sunday also saw academy graduate Jari Schuurman, Calvin Verdonk, Stef Gronsveld and keeper Kamil Miazek train with the first team for the first time. The fifth new youth addition Bart Nieuwkoop was unable to make it, but two players who were loaned out last season, Joey Sleegers and Warner Hahn, were there.
There were some new faces among the technical staff, too. New assistant coach Jan Wouters shared a pitch with the first-team squad for the first time, and with performance analyst David van Maurik. Roy Makaay, this season strikers’ coach for the first team and the three highest youth teams, also took to the field, which is set to be completely re-laid in a week or so.
Van Bronckhorst’s training session was attended by 23 players in all. Dirk Kuyt, Jordy Clasie, Karim El Ahmadi and Kenneth Vermeer all missed the opener. The four will join the squad a little later due to commitments at the end of last season meant they had to delay their holiday.
