Feyenoord booked their place in the semi-finals of the KNVB Cup on Wednesday night with a 4-1 win against Fortuna Sittard. Robin van Persie (2), Sven van Beek and Steven Berghuis scored the hosts’ goals at an icy De Kuip. Andrija Novakovich scored for the visitors.
Feyenoord began well, but Fortuna Sittard created the better chances. The visitors were dangerous, with Andrija Novakovich the main threat, but an alert Kenneth Vermeer was able to protect his clean sheet.
However, it was the hosts who grabbed the opening goal just before the break. Jeremiah St. Juste played the ball hard and low into Robin van Persie, who pulled off a great piece of skill to blast it into the back of the net to give Feyenoord a 1-0 lead.
The home side were hopeful of extending their lead in the second half, but after big chances for Nicolai Jørgensen (post) and Steven Berghuis (saved) Fortuna equalised out of the blue. Novakovich eased the ball past Vermeer on 54 minutes to make it 1-1.
Back to square one, Feyenoord went again, and soon got themselves into a healthy lead. Van Persie converted a penalty on 68 minutes, Sven van Beek headed in a Sam Larsson corner on 82 and in the dying seconds Berghuis claimed a goal of his own, smashing in the second penalty of the night to bring the scoring to an end at 4-1.
The win earned Feyenoord a place in the semi-final of the TOTO KNVB Cup. The draw will be made on Saturday, when Giovanni van Bronckhorst will find out what the next challenge is for his side.
