Feyenoord overpowered De Graafschap at De Kuip on Saturday night in the Eredivisie. The hosts won 4-0, with goals by Tonny Vilhena, Calvin Verdonk, Jeremiah St. Juste and Jens Toornstra.
First start for Martina
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side, which included Cuco Martina making his first start for the club, were looking to put last week’s loss at Excelsior behind them. It didn’t take too long for them to take the lead – Tonny Vilhena’s shot was deflected into the net on 28 minutes – but the home side really hit their stride after the break.
Defenders Calvin Verdonk (on the turn) and Jeremiah St. Juste (hard shot) gave Feyenoord a 3-0 lead within ten minutes of the restart; Jens Toornstra grabbed a fourth, heading a perfect Jordy Clasie cross into the bottom corner.
Jurjus in form
Feyenoord might have scored more but for Hidde Jurjus. The De Graafschap keeper denied a string of home players, including Steven Berghuis, Robin van Persie, St. Juste and substitute Nicolai Jørgensen, with an athletic display. At the other end, Kenneth Vermeer had little to do and was able to keep a clean sheet.
The victory keeps Feyenoord five points ahead of fourth place AZ. Defeat for Ajax elsewhere means that Feyenoord are eight points off second place.
