Feyenoord go down in Groningen

Feyenoord suffered their fifth away loss of the season at FC Groningen on Sunday. The hosts took all three points with 1-0 win with a Sven van Beek own goal the difference between the sides.

In the Eredivisie Feyenoord have performed poorly on their travels. Going into the match, three wins out of ten, with three draws and four defats was not a good record. Giovanni van Bronckhorst was set on changing that in the northern Netherlands.

His side were unable to achieve that, finding  FC Groningen’s aggression hard to live with. The oly goal of the game came on 26 minutes and it was an own goal by Sven van Beek. The centre back slid a cross from the left into the net, leaving keeper Kenneth Vermeer with no chance.

Nicolai Jørgensen, back in the starting line-up with Sam Larsson on the bench, was unable to get his side back on terms. Indeed, Feyenoord scarcely threatened Sergio Padt’s goal. There was though more work at the other end  for Vermeer, who kept the score down with some good saves.

Trip to PSV next
Feyenoord have an immediate opportunity to get back on track next week, when they visit league leaders PSV on Sunday. FC Emmen provide the opposition in the next home match a week later.
