After saying his formal farewells at De Kuip on Sunday, Giovanni van Bronckhorst took charge of Feyenoord for the last time...
Asked whether he could be congratulated after Saturday’s 2-1 win against AZ, Giovanni van Bronckhorst said that he would gladly accept congratulations for the three points but ‘not yet for third place’. Feyenoord have a seven-point lead over the Alkmaar side in the Eredivise but are not yet nailed on in third.
‘We have put ourselves in a great position to secure third place,’ said Van Bronckhorst. ‘We still have three matches for that and we want to get it done next Wednesday.’ A win at NAC Breda in midweek will wrap it up.
Van Bronckhorst was certainly very happy with how his team played. ‘We were good in the second half especially. I saw everything I wanted to see: fight, passion, tempo and dynamism. We turned the game around and deserved to win.’
The head coach also complimented Tyrell Malacia, who scored the equaliser with a sweet little rocket. ‘He scored a nice goal against VVV-Venlo and today again. This time he hit it with real technique. That is something we train on with our defenders.’
Van Bronckhorst also has concerns though, after Cuco Martina was stretchered off. ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with him exactly. He has a problem with his ankle and it was so serious that he had to be substituted. We will have more clarity on that over the next few days.’
