Giovanni van Bronckhorst was visibly disappointed after his side lost their opening Eredivisie fixture of the year at FC Z...
Feyenoord eased into the next round of the KNVB Cup on Thursday night. Head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side beat ADO Den Haag 5-1 at De Kuip, with goals from Nicolai Jørgensen (3), Eric Botteghin and Sam Larsson.
The hosts got on top from the kick-off. Jørgensen had two big chances within the first two minutes, but the Dane was unable to put them away. At the other end, Abdenasser El Khayati was more ruthless, netting with a shot via the underside of the bar to give the visitors an unlikely lead.
Third time right for Jørgensen
Feyenoord refused to be derailed by the setback, creating opportunities for Eric Botteghin and Steven Berghuis in response. The hosts did not have to wait too long for the breakthrough. When Jørgensen was presented with his third chance of the night he did not waste it. The striker latched onto a Giovanni Troupée back pass, rounded Robert Zwinkels and netted coolly.
Botteghin and Vermeer important
There was a feeling that the equaliser would be the first of many for Feyenoord, but the home crowd were made to wait until just before half time for the next goal. Botteghin headed in powerfully from a corner to give the hosts the lead. But Feyenoord owed the half-time lead as much to Kenneth Vermeer, who had deflected an Elson Hooi effort onto the bar with his feet earlier in the half.
Hat-trick breaks Hague resolve
Jørgensen made it 3-1 early in the second half. The Dane netted from close in after some fine work from Bart Nieuwkoop, who was having an impressive game. That broke the visitors’ resolve, but the Dane was not finished. Ten minutes from the end, Jørgensen scored with his boot in the near corner to make it 4-1. With his hat-trick in the bag, Jørgensen was brought off. Dylan Vente replaced him, with Yassin Ayoub also making an appearance off the bench in the final stages.
Larsson rounds off win
With the Dane off the pitch, a Swede stepped up to the mark to score the fifth home goal of the night. In the final minute of the 90, Sam Larsson netted with a hard shot across the box that went in off the post. It was just reward for a fine performance from Larsson.
Draw on Saturday night
The win earned Feyenoord a place in the last 16 of the KNVB Cup. The draw will take place on Saturday evening, with ties scheduled 18-20 December.
