A 3-0 win against VVV-Venlo at De Koel stadium lifted Feyenoord back into third place in the Eredivisie on Sunday afternoon. Sam Larsson, Nicolai Jørgensen and Tyrell Malacia scored the goals to claim three points, as rivals AZ dropped two points elsewhere.
With AZ playing earlier in the day, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side knew that a win would elevate them above the Alkmaar outfit and a tight defensive performance gave Feyenoord a strong foundation to build pressure against VVV-Venlo and test home keeper Lars Unnerstall.
Larsson smashes in opener
Unnerstall stopped a Nicolai Jørgensen header and shots from Sam Larsson and Jordy Clasie, but Larsson left him with no chance on 24 minutes. The Swedish winger beat the keeper with a hard shot to open the scoring.
Feyenoord lost Ridgeciano Haps to injury, but continued to press, which left space in behind for VVV. Kenneth Vermeer denied Peniel Mlapa an equaliser just ahead of the break, while Patrick Joosten, Roel Janssen, Mlapa again and Peter van Ooijen were dangerous early in the second half. Vermeer was up to the challenge every time, however.

The third goal came late on though Tyrell Malacia, The left-back, on for the injured Haps, rifled in a shot from a difficult angle, finding the net via the underside of the bar. It confirmed Feyenoord’s first away win of the calendar year and their first win in Venlo since 2012.
