Feyenoord will end the season in third place in the Eredivisie after an away win at NAC Breda. The league’s basement side were brushed aside as Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men won 4-0, with goals from Jeremiah St. Juste, Dylan Vente and Jens Toornstra (2).
While three points in Breda would guarantee Feyenoord European football next season, the hosts were desperate for a win to give them any chance of avoiding relegation. The visitors were in no mood for sympathy, however, pressing back NAC Breda from kick-off.
Feyenoord got their necks in front on 11 minutes. Tonny Vilhena had already hit the bar by then, but Jeremiah St. Juste was more precise in his finishing. The right back celebrated his hundredth Eredivisie appearance with a hard shot into the net.
Dylan Vente, starting up front due to the absence of Nicolai Jørgensen (suspended) and Robin van Persie (not up to match fitness), doubled the advantage just ahead of the break. His shot from distance looked to be comfortable for NAC keeper Benjamin van Leer, but he allowed the ball to slip through his fingers and go in over his shoulder.
Brace for Toorrnstra
After the break Feyenoord controlled the game, with Jens Toornstra adding two more to the visitor’s tally. His first was a header on 66 minutes, completing a fine move that started with a probing ball from Sam Larsson that had the defence backing up. Tonny Vilhena controlled the ball beautifully before whipping in an inch-perfect cross. Four minutes later the Swede netted from a curling free kick.
Kenneth Vermeer, completing his double century of appearances in the Eredivisie, kept a sheet clean at his end as Feyenoord secured the points and third place. NAC Breda look to have a battle on their hands at the other end of the table. They need to win both their remaining fixtures and hope that Excelsior lose all three of theirs.
ADO Den Haag up next
De Kuip hosts Feyenoord’s next game, against ADO Den Haag on Sunday 12 May. The fixture is a sell-out (check Ticket Exchange). The season ends on Wednesday 15 May with a match at Fortuna Sittard.
