Feyenoord have taken Rhu-endly ‘Cuco’ Martina on loan with immediate effect. The 29-year-old defender comes to De Kuip from Premier League club Everton. The move is a swift response to the loss of Eric Botteghin for the rest of the season, after the Brazilian limped out of the 6-2 win against Ajax on Sunday.
Martina has been out on loan to Stoke City since the summer, but he now returns to the city he grew up in and where he also played for the Sportclub Feyenoord youth academy. Martina went on to play for RBC Roosendaal, RKC Waalwijk and FC Twente in the Netherlands. Ronald Koeman took the defender to Southampton in 2015 and then to Everton when he moved to manage the side representing the blue half of Liverpool. Martina has a contract with Everton until the summer of 2020.
Stoke City supporters have seen Martina play 18 times for their side in the first half of the season. Before then, he made 28 appearances for Everton at the highest level, 36 for Southampton and 56 for FC Twente. He has also earned 36 caps for Curaçao, the country of his birth.
Technical director Martin van Geel is happy to have got a deal sorted out quickly after Eric Botteghin was ruled out for the rest of the season on Tuesday with a knee injury. ‘It’s incredibly sad for Eric that he has been ruled out for so long. Now he is sidelined, we would find it hard to cope with another setback in defence. We’ve addressed that with Martina, who has been on our radar in the past, is very experienced and an all-rounder, can play anywhere across the back and also knows the club and the city,’ said Van Geel.
