Feyenoord suffered a painful defeat against Fortuna Sittard in the Eredivisie on Sunday. The visitors 2-0 win at De Kuip ended the hosts’ unbeaten home record.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men had gone home 12 matches without a loss, but found it hard against a side that were only promoted to the Eredivisie at the end of last season. There were openings at both ends before the break, but no goals.
Feyenoord has difficulty breaking down a strong Fortuna defence, while, at the other end, the visitors broke fast, but were sloppy in their finishing. The first goal finally came early in the second half, and it was the visitors who claimed it.
The match was 51 minutes old when striker Andija Novakovich kept his cool after another fast break, playing the ball to Lars Hutten, who scored his sixth Eredivisie goal of the season to put his side ahead. The crowd got behind Feyenoord in the hunt for a leveller, but the hosts were restricted to shots from distance that mostly veered off target.
Renato Tapia and Robin van Persie were brought on for Jordy Clasie and Jan-Arie van der Heijden, but keeper Alexei Koselev was not to be beaten. In the end, it was Fortuna who netted the second goal of the afternoon in injury time. Substitute Ahmed El Messaoudi smashed in a shot that sealed Feyenoord’s fate.
