Feyenoord took more than point home from the draw in Eindhoven on Sunday. The strong performance gives Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side a confidence boost ahead of the midweek KNVB Cup semi-final against Ajax. ‘We will need to be at the same level as today,’ says the head coach.
While Van Bronckhorst would have preferred a win against the league leaders, he was very happy with how his men performed. Not least because only ten of them made it to the last half an hour, after Sven van Beek was red-carded for pulling down Steven Bergwijn, who was through on goal. ‘Sven had a split second to make a decision, something like that is a reflex,’ said Van Bronckhorst.
Although down to ten men, Feyenoord appeared to be on the way to three points when Nicolai Jørgensen opened the scoring. ‘In the first half we created a number of good chances,’ explained Van Bronckhorst. ‘It’s nice for Nico to score, because he has had it tough with his form recently due to injuries. He was outstanding today.’
PSV managed to draw level, but Van Bronckhorst left the stadium with a good feeling. ‘We didn’t panic after the red card and we played the match out excellently. We have a good feeling going towards Wednesday.’
