Jaap Stam will begin work as the new head coach of Feyenoord on 1 June 2019. The 46-year-old succeeds Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who announced at the end of January that he would leave the club this summer. Stam and Feyenoord have agreed a two-year contract.
Jaap Stam has been working as head coach at PEC Zwolle since the start of this calendar year. After making their approach, Feyenoord today reached agreement with both the Zwolle club and the former Dutch international. Stam is honoured to get the opportunity to lead Feyenoord: ‘I really feel at home at PEC Zwolle, but it’s true for every ambitious coach that if you get the chance to work at a club like Feyenoord you will think it over very seriously,’ said Stam.
Stam honoured with Feyenoord opportunity
‘After good, open talks with Martin van Geel about what’s possible and what’s not possible at Feyenoord, I quickly realised that I wanted to go completely for this opportunity. I am grateful to PEC Zwolle for the fact that they understand my ambitions and quickly reached agreement with Feyenoord,’ said Stam.
The former defender also said he was ‘really looking forward to getting down to work in Rotterdam. Obviously, I would say. But over the next few months I will do everything I can to bring the season to a good and successful end at PEC Zwolle with the players and the staff. That’s truly where my focus will be over the coming time.’
Martin van Geel delighted
Technical director Martin van Geel expressed great satisfaction at the arrival of Jaap Stam in June. ‘We know each other a very long time, so at Feyenoord we know what sort of person we are getting. Jaap is an impressive figure. He’s a man of stature, literally and figuratively. Jaap is a realist with a clear vision and a very impressive record as a player and appropriate experience as a coach. So it’s only logical that I am delighted that, with the cooperation of PEC Zwolle, we have already been able to confirm him for the coming seasons.’
Jaap Stam started his coaching career as assistant coach at PEC Zwolle, where he is now head coach. In the summer of 2013 he moved to Ajax, where he coached the youth, second team and first team defenders. In July 2014 he was also appointed head coach of Young Ajax, the club’s reserve team. In June 2016 Stam signed a contract as head coach of Reading in the English Championship, narrowly missing out on promotion to the Premier League in his first season. He returned to PEC Zwolle in 2019.
Stam started his impressive playing career at Zwolle too. He went on to play for Willem II, PSV, Manchester United, Lazio Roma, AC Milan and Ajax. He also made 66 appearances for the Dutch national side between 1996 and 2004.
