Jens Toornstra signed a four-year contract with Feyenoord on Monday after passing a medical. The 25-year-old joins the club with immediate effect from FC Utrecht, where he has played for the past two seasons. The midfielder also played for ADO Den Haag earlier in his career. Toornstra has been given the number 28 jersey at De Kuip.
The signing of Toornstra, who has made two international appearances for the Dutch team, gives coach Fred Rutten more options in midfield. ‘We’re delighted with Jens Toornstra’s arrival,’ said technical director Martin van Geel. ‘He is an all-round midfielder who can play in various positions and scores a lot of goals. His right foot also makes him valuable in dead-ball situations. He is a good fit for Feyenoord, in terms of both mentality and skill. We are very confident that Toornstra can get even better here.’
‘I’m very proud that I have been given the opportunity to play for such a big and great club,’ said Toornstra. ‘The switch to Feyenoord comes at the right time for me. I was ready to take a step up. And Feyenoord has been my club since I was a boy. I’m really looking forward to getting to work here.’
Toornstra has played two Eredivisie matches in the colours of FC Utrecht this season, scoring once. The Alphen aan den Rijn native netted 12 goals in 34 league appearances last term.
In total, Toornstra has racked up 158 Eredivisie appearances and scored 34 goals. In June 2013 he made his debut for Oranje in a friendly against Indonesia. He also played the friendly against China later that month.
