Feyenoord recorded a 4-3 win at PEC Zwolle on match day 28 in the Eredivisie on Sunday. No Eredivisie fixtures are schedule...
On Wednesday afternoon, Rick Karsdorp formally put his signature to the new contract agreed with Feyenoord a few weeks ago. The Feyenoord Academy graduate feels the new deal, which runs until mid-2020, is the latest highlight in his relatively short time as a member of the first-team squad. ‘I’m a real Feyenoord lad’, said the defender, whose previous deal ran until mid-2018. ‘It’s an indescribably feeling to be able to sign what’s already my third contract at this club.’
Karsdorp’s new contract is yet more proof of the significant progress the youngster has made recently. Since making his first-team debut last season, the defender has made 28 Eredivisie appearances and at the end of September he was named in the provisional Dutch squad for the first time. Karsdorp did not make the final squad. ‘To be honest that’s not something I’m worrying too much about,’ said the defender. ‘I’ve been out of action for a few weeks due to injury. Before that injury I think I put in my best performances for Feyenoord. I want to get back to that standard. Thankfully, I’m fully fit again and I can focus exclusively on Feyenoord’s matches.’
In that respect, this week is all about staking a claim for a starting place against Ajax at De Kuip on Sunday. ‘Until last week’s cup tie we hadn’t beaten Ajax for a long time,’ said Karsdorp. ‘That cup tie has definitely given us confidence ahead of Sunday’s match, especially how we played in the second half. We have to play to that standard for the whole match on Sunday.’
