Rick Karsdorp placed his signature on a new contract at De Kuip on Tuesday afternoon. Feyenoord agreed the deal with Karsdorp some time ago, but the formalities had to wait until now. The 19-year-old youth international, who first joined Feyenoord as an E junior, will remain at the club until mid 2018.
Karsdorp has made great strides in the past year or so since penning his first professional contract with Feyenoord at the beginning of 2014. ‘We’ve been positively surprised by Rick,’ says technical director Martin van Geel. ‘It’s been shown in practice that a new challenge in the first team squad has been very good for Rick, while he has had a coach who is very good at developing young players.’
‘It’s true that things have gone very fast recently,’ said Karsdorp. ‘In the youths I was always one of the better players in my class, so I sometimes cut corners in training. In the first team squad everything is much faster and I play with better players, which makes me a better player too. It’s been very good for me to have that extra stimulus this season.’
Karsdorp has made five Eredivisie appearances this term, primarily at right back. ‘I always played in midfield in the youths, but this season I’m fully focused on the right back position. I think I can do full justice to my talents there, because I am very powerful and I can get up field a lot. I’m bound to return to midfield sometime in the future, but for now I want to be seen as a right back.’
