Giovanni van Bronckhorst saw his Feyenoord react well to the weekend’s unexpected loss with a 4-1 win at home to Fortuna Sittard. In doing so, the holders booked their place in this season’s semi-final.
‘Mission accomplished’ was the head coach’s conclusion post-match. Van Bronckhorst spoke in terms of a deserved win and praised captain Robin van Persie, who netted twice. ‘Robin was very good and very important for the team today. Whether he can play against Ajax on Sunday? I assume so. We have now played midweek on Wednesday rather than Thursday, so that gives him an extra day to recover.’
Van Persie gave Feyenoord the lead on two separate occasions at a frosty De Kuip. Van Bronckhorst acknowledged that the visitors could just as easily have scored first. ‘They had the first two big chances, which were created because we were not properly positioned when they broke. Kenneth kept us level in those situations.’
Feyenoord took heed of the two warnings, as Van Bronckhorst himself noted. ‘After the first half an hour we went up a gear and took control of the match. We earned this victory, based on how many chances we made. It’s great to be in the semi-final again, but we haven’t won anything yet.’
