Bart Nieuwkoop made an appearance for Feyenoord reserves on Monday afternoon. The defender suffered a hamstring injury in mid-July, but is now ready to start getting back to action. The defender played 45 minutes in the away fixture at SC Cambuur reserves, which the hosts won 2-0.
Sven van Beek also got some game time in Leeuwarden. The central defender came off the bench in last week's Champions League tie against Napoli for his first appearance since 1 May 2016. He played an hour against Cambuur reserves on Monday.
Coach Roy Makaay was unhappy about losing the match, but delighted to see Nieuwkoop and Van Beek back in action. ‘Of course it’s never nice to lose, but the most important thing is that Bart and Sven played today,’ said Makaay post-match. ‘Before the start, we’d decided to let Bart play a half and Sven an hour. They both coped physically, which is a good step on the way back. It’s great for those lads.’
