Feyenoord wrapped up the first half of the season with a draw at ADO Den Haag on Sunday. The match at the Cars Jeans Stadium ended 2-2. Steven Berghuis and Sam Larsson scored the goals for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side, with Abdenasser El Khayati grabbing a brace for the hosts.
Van Bronckhorst was hoping to end the year with a good performance and a good result in the Eredivisie after qualifying for the quarterfinals of the KNVB Cup on Thursday. The match did not start as planned, though, as Bart Nieuwkoop pulled down an ADO Den Haag forward in the fourth minute. Referee Kevin Blom showed him a yellow card and Abdenasser El Khayati curled his free kick into the top corner.

Feyenoord took some time to regain their rhythm, but gradually started to take control, creating a couple of half-chances. Steven Berghuis, Renato Tapia and Robin van Persie all had digs from distance, but ADO keeper Robert Zwinkels was untroubled as none of the shots were on target.
The equaliser did arrive in the last minute of the first half. It came from a nice attacking move in which Sam Larsson played a deep ball in to Van Persie. He passed to Berghuis, who smashed in his fifth league goal of the campaign
Sweet Larsson strike
The second half saw Feyenoord start more brightly, with Van Persie and Nieuwkoop close to giving the visitors the lead. Zwinkels denied both with two fine saves. He was unable to deny Larsson on 68 minutes, though. The Swede cut in from the left and struck the ball sweetly into the net off the right-hand post.
It was looking good for the visitors but the hosts spoiled the party with a quarter of an hour to go. Nieuwkoop picked up his second yellow card of the game and was obliged to leave the field of play after VAR flagged up a foul by the defender in the box. El Khayati stepped up to convert the spot kick and bring his side level at 2-2.
Despite being a man down, Feyenoord had the best opportunity to claim all three points. Substitute Orkun Kökcü received from Berghuis in space, but Zwinkels saved again. As a result, the game finished with honours even, which leaves Feyenoord third in the table, 12 points behind Eredivisie leaders PSV and 10 behind second-place Ajax.
