Head coach was pleased after Feyenoord booked their place in the quarterfinals of the KNVB Cup on Thursday night. As well as the good result, Giovanni van Bronckhorst was delighted with his side’s performance.
‘We played really well,’ said Van Bronckhorst after the 1-0 win against FC Utrecht, which was secured by a Tonny Vilhena goal on 27 minutes. ‘I am extremely satisfied with the performance. Our positioning was better than last Sunday, including when we broke. Plus we were very threatening up front.’
Unfortunately, the constant threat did not result in a flurry of goals. Feyenoord could have wrapped up the win early on, but lacked sharpness in front of goal, especially in the second half. ‘We kept it tense without needing to and got away with it at the end. We should have converted our chances.’
‘I’m happy we have advanced in the cup, but we will now focus on the league game against ADO Den Haag. We hope to end the year well there on Sunday,’ said Van Bronckhorst, who saw Steven Berghuis exit at half time on Thursday. ‘His calf was troubling him. We’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see how he is going into Sunday.’
