Giovanni van Bronckhorst lauded Robin van Persie after his contribution to Feyenoord’s 4-0 win against FC Emmen on Sunday. The captain scored three of the four goals. ‘It’s amazing how high his standard is every single week.’
Van Persie’s triple strike – one at the end of the second half and two more after the break – was decisive. ‘It’s actually strange that this was his first hattrick in the Eredivisie,’ said Van Bronckhorst. ‘Robin has again shown how good he still is. He constantly made himself available to receive the ball and his creativity made the difference.’
It was turning into a frustrating afternoon for the hosts until the captain stepped up. Post-match Van Bronckhorst also praised Kenneth Vermeer, who denied the visitors not once but twice early on. The keeper was eventually forced off with an injury. ‘Kenneth had a problem after the first chance. I hope it’s not too bad, but we cannot say much about how serious it is yet.’
The 4-0 win was welcome after the midweek elimination in the semi-final of the KNVB Cup. ‘That was a big disappointment, but we had to put in a performance again today. We didn’t manage that fully, because we didn’t pass the ball around quickly enough and we have to do that better. But I am pleased we won with a lot of goals.’
