After saying his formal farewells at De Kuip on Sunday, Giovanni van Bronckhorst took charge of Feyenoord for the last time in Sittard on Wednesday night. And the head coach was given a rousing send-off by the travelling support. ‘That felt very good,’ he said post-match.
‘The bond with the fans will always be there,’ added Van Bronckhorst, who headed to the away section after the game to thank those who has travelled south. ‘On Sunday I felt the appreciation in the whole stadium and today again it was real great. I’m done now, although it doesn’t feel like it yet. That will come in over the next few days. In any case, I’m happy we won the last match.’
The travelling fans urged Van Bronckhorst to give them a song and the former international, with 106 caps to his name, was happy to oblige. ‘I wasn’t sure at first, but I thought it was good to start ‘Hand in hand kameraden’. It’s our club song and we should be proud of it.’
