Feyenoord added to Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s defensive options by signing Jan-Arie van der Heijden on a three-year contract on Monday. The 27-year-old arrives on a free transfer from Vitesse, after a four-year stay in Arnhem. Van der Heijden will wear the number 6 short at Feyenoord.
The addition of Van der Heijden adds depth to Giovanni van Bronckhors’s squad. ‘That’s why we’re delighted with this deal,’ says technical director Martin van Geel. ‘Van der Heijden has played at the highest level in the Netherlands for years and, at 27, he is now stronger than ever. He can compete, and his age and experience mean that he can help other players develop.’
Van der Heijden has been a regular starter at Vitesse for the past four years, making 132 appearances all told in the league and play-offs. The Leiden-born defender scored three goals last season.
Van der Heijden has also played for Willem II and Ajax. He made his official debut for the Amsterdam club on 4 November 2007.
