Agreement in principle on new five-year contract for Kökcü

Feyenoord and Orkun Kökcü have reached an agreement in principle on an extension to the player’s contract. The talented midfielder will sign a new deal soon, committing himself to the club until 1 July 2025. Kökcü’s current contract was set to expire in 2023.

Though still only 19, Kökcü has made impressive progress in recent years. After spending four years at Feyenoord Academy, he made his first-team bow for the club in 2018, scoring in both his first appearance in preseason against Gemert and his Eredivisie debut against FC Emmen.

‘The next goal is a starting spot,’ said the midfielder, who can use either foot, when he signed his first contract extension in April 2019. He achieved his target in his first full season, 2019-2020, before it was brought to a premature end by the coronavirus pandemic.

Kökcü was Dick Advocaat’s pick virtually every week, and he quickly became an important member of the team that started to climb the league after a shaky start. The experienced coach expressed his appreciation of the midfielder on more than one occasion.

The agreement with Kökcü has also been warmly welcomed by Frank Arnesen. ‘Orkun made huge progress last season and he has already made great strides in his short career,’ said the technical director. ‘We want to reward him for that now. We are confident that he will continue to advance over the next few years. And for us it is also great to be able to tie down such a talented player for an extended period.’
